Component 3 – Pilot Project for sharing AIS information in the region

The automatic identification system (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used for collision avoidance on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS). AIS data of the Mediterranean states is shared through a regional sever called MARES and enables an efficient vessel traffic monitoring in the region. If an enlargement country has a national network and is willing to share its AIS data, a Pilot Project may be launched involving that country in order to support such data exchange. A possible multi step approach would be to enable enlargement countries that have national networks to start sharing information between them, either with SAFEMED countries or with some selected EU Member States.
