Where does the vessel position information reported by EMSA come from?




Member States can make full use of a range of integrated vessel reporting data from the suite of EMSA systems hosted at or operated by EMSA, in accordance with their individual access rights. This may include the following data sources:

  • Terrestrial and satellite Automatic Identification System (AIS): AIS is a maritime broadcast system, based on the transmission of very high frequency radio signals.

 

  • Long range identification and tracking (LRIT): LRIT is a global ship identification and tracking system based on communications satellites.

 

  • Vessel Monitoring System (VMS): VMS is a fishing vessel monitoring system for fisheries surveillance which is based on GPS-derived vessel positions transmitted by satellite.
