MARPOL Annex VI was recently added to the list of relevant Instruments of the MEDMOU. To support the full and harmonised inspection of the Annex VI related aspects, a specialised training on MARPOL Annex VI was organised for the MEDMOU Members States.

The training, delivered from 13 October to 11 December 2026, consisted of

• three   asynchronous phases covered the legal and technical requirements, the fuel-based and abatement methods for lowering the sulphur level, the sampling process, tools and equipment required during the inspection as well as the communication skills and professional conduct of the inspectors

• 3-day in-person held in Türkiye which aimed to enhance the participants’ practical skills through the analysis of case studies and the execution of real fuel-sampling activities on board ships in the port of Ambarlı. For the sampling exercise, portable devices donated by EMSA to Türkiye within the framework of BCSEA project were used.  

The training was attended by 22 PSCOs of the Maritime Administrations of Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Malta, Morocco, Tunisia and Türkiye.
