Green Port Mobility & Digital Welfare for Seafarers
Italy

Making life greener and simpler at the same time in the northernmost port on the Mediterranean!
The port of Porto Nogaro is encouraging sustainable transport with a bike-sharing scheme and a bike facilities station for bicycle maintenance.
This service allows seafarers and port personnel to travel the 5km distance between the commercial terminals and the town of San Giorgio di Nogaro without relying on fossil-fuel-powered vehicles.
Ten bicycles with puncture-proof tires are now at the disposal of anyone travelling between the port and the town, making it easier for the hundreds of seafarers who use the port each year to avail of a quick, effective and healthy means of transport. New signs help bike users orient themselves, and high-visibility gear is available to bike users when they take trips in and out of town.
At the same time, the IT infrastructure at the Stella Maris port office was fully overhauled. High-speed fibre-optic hotspots and interactive digital boards meant that paper-based documentation could be digitalised, reducing physical commuting for administrative tasks. This digital leap facilitates faster issuing of passwords and SIM cards for seafarers, optimizing their time and reducing the port's overall administrative environmental footprint.
