SAFEMED IV - Training on ISM Code and auditing techniques

Training on ISM and auditing techniques

In the framework of SAFEMED IV project the Agency has undertaken the organisation of a regional Training on ISM Code and auditing techniques which took place online from 17 to 21 May 2021. Overall, ten participants from Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia have undergone the training.

The ISM Code is a mandatory international standard for the safe management and operation of ships. It sets the requirements for a company management system with regard to safety and pollution prevention, including the development and implementation of a Safety Management System (SMS).

The course focussed on the evolution of management systems and the ISM Code, the general requirements, types and scopes of flag State audits, the performance of flag State audits in office and on board ships – preparation and planning, conducting and following-up, the formalities and reporting procedures covering the flag State audits, the implementation of corrective or preventive actions as a result of flag State audits, the certification process, as well as with the role and qualification of flag State auditors.

Furthermore, lectures on the most effective approach to auditing techniques were provided and participants were involved in workshops and exercises using scenarios linked to the ISM Auditing procedures and real cases for discussion.
