Integrated technical surveillance system for territorial waters and the Curonian Lagoon

This project consists of an integrated technical surveillance system for Lithuanian territorial waters and the Curonian Lagoon, one of Europe’s largest and most ecologically rich coastal lagoons. The Lithuanian part of the lagoon is designated as a Natura 2000 site under both the EU Habitats and Birds Directives, while the surrounding Curonian Spit is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lagoon hosts 62 protected bird species.

The surveillance system uses integrated cameras, thermal imaging devices, and radar systems for real-time monitoring and analysis via six radar towers with daylight cameras and thermal cameras and one radar tower, also equipped with daylight and thermal cameras.

By implementing this sustainable solution, the need for continuous patrols by ships and boats, as well as fuel consumption, is significantly reduced. Due to the efficiency of this system, CO₂ emissions, the risk of technical failures or accidents, and noise levels in environmentally sensitive areas are all considerably decreased. The system has a much lower environmental impact and helps protect ecosystems, including the habitats and nesting sites of rare or endangered species. It also enables early detection of oil spills and other pollution incidents and illegal fishing activities, as well as allowing a very rapid response if any infringements or pollution events are detected.
