EMSA Academy - Tools
The EMSA Academy is supported by an array of tools which enrich the learning experience of participants.
At the heart of the Academy is the Maritime Knowledge Centre, or MaKCs — a modern learning platform that provides access to curricula, courses, assessments, and collaborative learning activities anytime, anywhere. It enables learners and facilitators to connect, share knowledge, and track progress throughout the learning journey.
To enhance practical training, the Academy offers VRESI, the Virtual Reality Environment for Ship Inspections. This immersive platform allows trainees to conduct realistic ship inspections in a safe and controlled virtual environment, either using VR equipment or a standard computer.
The Academy also provides RuleCheck, a comprehensive repository of maritime legislation, giving users direct access to up-to-date international, European, and regional maritime regulations and guidance.
Supporting content creation is the E-Lab, a multimedia production facility equipped with professional audio, video, and broadcasting tools that help bring learning materials to life.
Together, these tools make the EMSA Academy a modern and innovative hub for maritime learning and capacity building.
Maritime Knowledge Centre (MaKCs)
The Maritime Knowledge Centre (MaKCs) is the Academy’s Learning Management System based on Moodle. It is the single point of access for all learners to all curricula, short courses and part-time courses of the EMSA Academy. Leveraging the flexibility and scalability of Moodle, MaKCs enables learners to access a wide range of educational materials and resources anytime and anywhere, promoting self-paced and individualised learning. The integration of e-learning through Moodle not only supports interactive and engaging content delivery but also facilitates ongoing assessment and feedback, enhancing the overall learning experience. Additionally, e-learning platforms like Moodle foster a collaborative environment, allowing learners and facilitators to communicate easily, share knowledge, and participate in discussions regardless of their physical location. It allows for the creation and delivery of learning services, for assessment purposes, and for communication and collaboration between learners, and between learners and facilitators.
MaKCs provides integrated support for six activities required in the delivery of the Academy’s learning services: creation, organization, delivery, communication, collaboration, and assessment. Through the use of MaKCs, the EMSA Academy is enabled to:
- Deliver, track, monitor and report about curricula and courses delivered by the Agency and by other beneficiary organizations;
- Create online communication opportunities for instructor-learner and learner-learner interactions;
- Create and share learning activities, assessment tasks and evaluation surveys.
- Build collaborative learning environments and problem solving activities;
- Link external tools and applications to courses and training activities;
- Embed VRESI (Virtual Reality Environment for Ship Inspections) scenarios among course activities.
Virtual Reality Environment for Ship Inspections (VRESI)
The VRESI application is an innovative application to facilitate and enrich trainings on ship inspections. It employs state-of-art technologies like Unity-3D to build a realistic, immersive and configurable space where trainees are able to perform ship inspections in a safe and controlled environment. Users can connect to the platform from anywhere through internet, by either wearing their VR goggles or by using a normal computer and hence experiencing an enriched and immersive safety inspection onboard an array of different ships.
RuleCheck
Within the capacity building toolbox, the Agency has developed RuleCheck, a web-based Repository of Maritime Legislation that provides to users’ access to the updated editions of IMO Conventions, Codes, Resolutions and Circulars, ILO Conventions and Guidelines, Maritime related EU Regulations and Directives and the Paris MoU Manual and Instructions. The tool supports EU Member States, IPA and ENP countries in their capacity of Flag and Port States, as well as eight regional Port state control regimes in the world thus enhancing access to the up-to-date regulations, fostering further global harmonization of the implementation of the international conventions and ensuring level playing field.
E-Lab
The E-lab was established in 2020 as a key component of the EMSA Academy. It plays a vital role in the creation and dissemination of educational content, significantly enhancing the Academy's operational efficiency. The E-lab is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a green-screen, two editing stations (one of which also serves as a broadcasting station), three HD cameras, four professional microphones, and others. The E-lab supports various learning activities designed and delivered by the EMSA Academy, including the development of video content, assistance with audio, pictures, presentations, documentation, calendars, and a wide array of multimedia materials
