Containership safety

container2Containership safety, included in the EMSA 5-year strategy 2020-2024, is an important topic in the context of ships for which the risk and impact of accidents are high. The EMCIP analysis of marine casualties and incidents involving container vessels provides an overview of the potential safety issues detected. Containership safety includes aspects such as cargo fires, loss of containers, cargo handling and structural integrity.

On the topic of cargo fires, in EMSA commissioned the CARGOSAFE study in 2021 with the objective of identifying cost-effective risk control options to prevent or mitigate the consequences of such fires.
