Toolbox Diversity and Inclusion + Waves of Change

In the agency for Maritime and Coastal Services of Belgium, sustainability starts with people: who they are, how they feel, and whether they are given a seat at the table when decisions are made. The Agency views diversity and inclusion as a driver of greening at organisational and societal level; a viewpoint that gave rise to the Waves of Change and the Diversity & Inclusion Toolbox project.

In collaboration with De Blauwe Cluster (a network of innovative organizations in the sustainable blue economy in Belgium), the Agency created a new meeting platform where inspiring voices, stories, and data come together and where ideas can emerge. In 2025, the platform focused on the underrepresentation of women in the maritime sector, while in 2026, they will address age-conscious HR policies and working with different generations, from Gen X to Baby Boomers.

The Diversity & Inclusion Toolbox is a set of 16 short, playful methodologies to help employees, teams, schools, and organizations foster awareness, dialogue, and change around diversity and inclusion. The toolbox initiates conversations about topics that may be difficult in the workplace and are rarely discussed. It makes diversity tangible, accessible, and usable — from the classroom to the boardroom — using language that invites rather than excludes.

The entire project underlines the inclusive nature of the European Green Deal and emphasises that a sustainable future requires not only technological innovation, but above all people who feel involved, recognize themselves in their sector, and feel co-ownership of change.
